HISTORY & PEOPLE

The Peter and Irene Abe Centre for Excellence was organized and created largely by the Abe Family. The name of the Centre is given in honour of our parents who had a great impact on our lives and the lives of many people in Uganda.

Peter Abe and Irene Atokena rewarded us with the life skills which we hope to pass on to other children. Over the years, the Abe Family, individually and together, has worked voluntarily and in different capacities with children and Internally Displaced People Camps:

Dr. Eve Abe - As chairperson of the task force to the Acoli Religious Peace Initiative (ARLPI) Dr. Abe worked with religious leaders and developed the aide memoire presented to United Nation Development Programme (UNDP). Eve Abe's recent New York Times and National Geographic coverage concerning mutual trauma in elephants and children of Uganda has brought considerable attention to their plight. Many people having read the article have offered to give funds and also volunteer in many different capacities.

Ms. Judith Abe-Byabusha - Ms. Abe-Byabusha is a trained nurse and investment banker and works extensively with children and elderly. She has collected and distributed clothing and other essentials for the camp children.

Mr. Frank Okello Abe - Mr. Abe has worked extensively in charity work. Over the past 8 years, Frank was able to send more than 400 computers and 40,000 textbooks to assist schools in war-torn Northern Uganda (article available from the New Vision Newspaper). Seven Kings High School, Ilford, Essex donated over 200 computers and 20,000 textbooks between 1997 and 2000. Windsor Boys’ School in Windsor, Berkshire donated over 200 computers and 20,000 textbooks plus sports equipment between 2000 and 2006. Frank also volunteer teaches at schools that have serious staff shortages. He also coaches Basketball at Windsor Boys’ School and the Murchison Falls Hawks (in the Ugandan Basketball 1st Division).

Dr. Ben Omara Abe - Dr. Abe has facilitated and organized children dental care and brought donated prosthetics for the injured children at the camps. In association with Seattle University Rotary Club of District 5030 and ProSports Club of Bellevue, Washington, he has distributed over six hundred wheelchairs and tricyles to the physically challenged.

Dr. Luka Okech Abe - Dr. Abe has assisted Smile Power Foundation in equipping the government medical centre with dental chairs, equipments and solar power located near Gulu.

Miss Ruth Lakereber Abe - Miss Abe has helped in the placement and care of refugees and orphans.

Ms. Nile Abe - Ms. Abe has been involved in diverse activities that include meal planning for groups of children from the camps and community.

Dr. Phoebe Arach Abe - Dr. Abe is a medical doctor and volunteers at the camps to treat children. She also supports a group of young people through their education and has created a dance troop that performs traditional dances at locales including Nairobi and the Uganda National Theatre in Kampala. All proceeds from a music CD she has produced go the children's fund (www.purple-lion.co.uk and Dr. Abe can also be seen featured in: http://myspace.com./docabe.
